A peaceful, predominantly Karen market town on the banks of the Thanlwin (Salween) River, Hpa-an features on the southeastern tourist circuit due  to its proximity to the spectac u- lar karst terrain of the surround- ing countryside. Apart from the  unremarkable Shweyinhmyaw Pagoda, whose terrace juts out over the river, sights are thin on the ground. The most enticing option for a late-afternoon stroll is the trip across the river to Hpa-pu Mountain, a prominent peak on the far side of the Thanlwin whose summit may be reached via a stepped path in a little under half an hour. The reward for the effort is sweeping, magnificent views, over the river and beyond to Mount Zwegabin.
