A bit farther up Shwegondaing Road is a less well known temple housing a colossal reclining Buddha. Constructed in 1966 using funds donated by a wealthy local businessman, the 230-ft- (70-m-) tall figure rests in a vast hangar made of red corrugated iron and steel girders. A stepped platform at its northern end provides a useful vantage point from which to view the Buddha’s giant feet, divided into squares and inscribed with 108 auspi- cious symbols. The adjoining monastic complex is home to around 500 monks and also holds a renowned Vipassana meditation center.
