The infamous “Death Railway” connected with the Burmese rail network at Thanbyuzayat. The large War Cemetery on the north west side of town is the final resting place of 3,617 of the estimated 16,000 Allied PoWs who died working on the line. Memorials on the site also feature dog tags taken from some of those who were buried where they fell beside the tracks. Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the immacu late head stones are set amid lawns around a single white cross.
